Notes Along the Way — Week 1
Things aren’t going according to plan—at least not in the neat, clean way I imagined. It’s time to admit I’ve fallen short of the Festive 500 goal this holiday season: riding 500 km (311 miles) between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Last year, I rode 330 miles without much drama. This year has been different. I’ve struggled to cover even half that distance (with one more day still left). I had good intentions and solid plans, but the weather interrupted nearly every attempt. I could have pushed harder or worked around it more, but I didn’t. That’s part of the story too.
Stepping back, though, the picture changes.
I’ve been getting to the gym regularly and keeping up with strength training. I’ve ridden just over 153 miles this week—short of the target, yes, but right where I should be for this point in my training. The conditions have also been harsher this year: snow, colder temperatures, wind, rain, fog.
Some of those rides were actually fun. Snow, mud, slush. Messy, imperfect rides that reminded me why I like being out there in the first place.
I’ve also been riding indoors when necessary. It’s not my preference, but I’m embracing it, and it’s making me stronger.
Then there’s progress that doesn’t show up in mileage totals. I’m learning more about bike mechanics. A cassette tool and chain pliers arrived today, and I’ve been putting effort into creating a workable garage setup. I now own a bike stand. I’ve started the chain waxing process. I can confidently set up my own tubeless tires—something I couldn’t do at this time last year.
The most important thing: I’m eager to train. The desire is still there, steady and intact.
In about a month, I’ll fly with my bike for the first time. This will be a new kind of challenge, and an opportunity for growth.
It’s easy to feel discouraged during this dark stretch of winter. But I’m not falling behind. I’m laying groundwork. Not everything needs to look impressive to be meaningful. Spring will come. I plan to be ready.
